Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University were the winners of the inaugural UniSport Australia Esports Championships.

The victors were announced after seven weeks of competition across three titles - Rocket League, FIFA 20 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

RMIT University triumphed with 24 points, followed by Monash University on 18 points and Griffith University on 12 points.

Griffith University claimed the Rocket League title, defeating RMIT University in the final.

The overall winners were again runners-up in the FIFA 20 contest, losing to Victoria University.

Monash University finished both first and second place in the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate event.

Although RMIT University failed to achieve an individual title, their overall performance was enough to put them on top of the podium.

"It’s been fantastic to expand our esports offerings and provide wider opportunities to our students, particularly during the challenging times presented by the COVID-19 pandemic," said UniSport Australia nationals project manager Natalie Broom.

The Championships were held in conjunction with the Australian Esports League (AEL).

"It is incredible to see so many students come together representing not only their team but their university in the Championships," said AEL esports director Reg Torr.

"This is a great step towards the future of esports in the university space by creating a meaningful and well governed tournament that is accessible to all."
