The International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) has reportedly confirmed its European Championships will take place in Moscow from November 20 to 29.

Russia's capital was originally due to stage the European Championships in March, but the event was pushed back to June in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

An indefinite postponement followed and then came new dates in October, but the competition was delayed again "in order to further minimise the health and logistic risks connected to the pandemic".

This time, the IFSC has confirmed the competition can go ahead next month, as reported by Russian state news agency TASS

"We are pleased with this difficult decision, which was made by the IFSC Executive Board in current conditions," said Russian Climbing Federation President Dmitry Bychkov.

Organisers are set to use health protocols and measures to ensure the safety of all participants.

Russia is the fourth most affected country from COVID-19, having reported more than 1.2 million cases and 21,400 deaths.

The European Championships are still due to be a qualification event for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, with two quota places on offer - one in the men's competition and one in the women's.

Sport climbing is due to make its Olympic debut at the Games, which were rearranged as a result of the global health crisis.

The Olympics are now scheduled for July 23 to August 8 2021.

In the case continental competitions can not be held this year, the IFSC confirmed it will use rankings from the 2019 World Championships to allocate the remaining Tokyo 2020 quota places.
