Denmark's Anne-Marie Rindom is a step closer to successfully defending her laser radial title with one day left at the European Laser Championships in Gdansk in Poland.

Rindom recorded another solid day in the women's race, coming second, ninth and sixth as three races were stage in the gold fleet.

Her lead is now 22 points, following a poor day for Agata Barwińska of Poland, who had been the Dane's closest challenger.

Dutch world and Olympic champion Marit Bouwmeester is second, having placed first and fourth in individual races today, but that came after she did not compete in the day's first contest, which may well prevent her from winning the title.

Rindom has 22 points, Bouwmeester 44 and Barwińska 53.

Greek sailor Vasileia Karachaliou, who won one of the day's individual races, is fourth on a total score of 55.

Britain currently has a stranglehold on the men's laser podium, with Michael Beckett leading the way.

However, Beckett discarded his first race of the day when he finished 24th and could only follow that up with a 22nd-place finish, so his lead has been cut.

Beckett has a score of 59 and Elliot Hanson is second on 61.3.

Hanson placed sixth and 19th today, with the later resulted discarded at present.

After falling down the standings on days two and four, Lorenzo Chiavarini's title defence is not quite over and he has a score of 73.

The closest challengers to wreck an all-British podium are the United States' Charlie Buckingham, who performed well to move up to fourth on 83, Russia's Sergei Komissarov on 90 and William De Smet of Belgium on 92.

Giovanni Coccoluto of Italy and Guatemalan guest Juan Ignacio Maegli took the two wins in the class today.

The Netherlands' Paul Hameeteman's lead looks under threat in the men's laser radial too after he had his two worst performances - discarding 12th- and 13th-place finishes.

He sits on a score of 30, only four ahead of Ukraine's Oskar Madonich, who finished sixth and ninth today.

Poland's Przemysław Machowski twice came fifth and rounds out the top three on a score of 40; compatriot Filip Ciszkiewicz is narrowly behind on 42.

Ireland's Tom Higgins has emerged as late contender for the minor medals after winning the second race today, ending on a total score of 45.

Finland's Otto Dahlberg is now on a score of 82 in 11th overall, having won the opening race of the day.

Winners of the European Laser Championships are due to be crowned tomorrow.
