International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) has announced Manfred Maier as their COVID-19 coordinator.

Maier, who has been an athlete and coach, currently serves as the development coordinator of the IBSF.

The governing body said the Austrian official is now a certified COVID-19 coordinator, after completing an e-learning course produced by the Red Cross.

The course required completion of eight digital training modules.

Modules included basics of infectiology, questions of law and data protection, and risk assessment.

Routing, hygiene, information and training of responsible persons on site were also part of the course.

A focus was placed on behaviour and measures in case of suspected and confirmed cases of infection.

The IBSF say Maier is now fully involved in the implementation of their hygiene concept for the upcoming season.

The IBSF last month published a 26-page COVID-19 Prevention Guidelines for all athletes and staff ahead of the return to competitive action.

The document includes general hygiene and distance guidelines, rules for training, races and award ceremonies as well as COVID-19 testing before and during an event.

Only one member from each bobsleigh team will be allowed to collect their medal at a socially-distanced awards ceremony.

Athletes are urged not to shake hands or hug, keeping two metres apart and wearing masks and disposable gloves.

The IBSF has planned for double World Cup events to minimise travel during the first part of the season.

The Latvian town of Sigulda and the Austrian city of Innsbruck are set to share the opening four World Cup events, hosting in November and December respectively.

The German towns of Winterberg and Königssee, St. Moritz in Switzerland and 2022 Winter Olympic host Beijing are set to host one event each at the start of 2021.
