The Jumbo-Visma rider completed the 173 kilometres course from Irun to Arrate in 4hrs 22min and 34sec.

He broke away from the small group of riders leading the race in the final kilometres and was not challenged at the line. 

Richard Carapaz of Ecuador trailed by a second, with Dan Martin of Ireland completing the podium.

Britain's Chris Froome, taking part in his last Grand Tour race for Ineos-Grenadiers, struggled to keep up with the pace of his team mates and crossed the line more than 11 minutes after Roglič. 

"I'm very happy, really very happy," Roglič said, according to Cycling News. 

"The team again rode really strong, they worked perfectly the whole day and at the end I was able to win, so it’s top. 

"It's a beautiful start. 

"I'll try to enjoy it day by day."

The race continues tomorrow with the second stage, a hilly 151.6km ride from Pamplona to Lekunberri.
