World Sailing has said it will work with countries interested in hosting the Youth Sailing World Championships and aim to organise the event in December 2021.

This year’s Youth Sailing World Championships were cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The 2021 event was also impacted, with World Sailing agreeing with organisers in The Hague to move the competition from July next year to 2022.

World Sailing welcomed interest from countries in hosting the 2021 Youth Sailing World Championships.

The governing body’s Youth Events Sub-committee has revealed interest from multiple destinations.

Argentina, Bermuda, Brazil, China, Malta, Oman, Portugal, Singapore and Spain are among countries to have expressed an interest.

Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates and San Diego in the United States have also emerged as potential hosts.

World Sailing said it will now work with potential bidders towards organising the event for December 2021.

The meeting recommended supporting several submissions, including one relating to mixed events at the Youth Sailing World Championships.

A submission on equipment for the kiteboarding event at future Youth Worlds was recommended to be approved as well.

From 2021, if the host decides to include kiteboarding, competitors would be encouraged to bring their own equipment to allow them to choose between sizes as per class rules.

The Youth Events Sub-committee deferred a proposal relating to foiling windsurfing equipment as an option for selection at the Youth Worlds.

It was decided that foiling youth equipment should be explored further before deciding on a manufacturer, with concerns voiced regarding equipment suppliers and the ability of emerging nations to react to any changes.

The committee said the Techno 293+ will likely remain as the equipment in 2021 and potentially also 2022.

A submission referring to establishing a base budget for World Sailing Training and Development Programmes was recommended to be supported in principle.

Suggestions of a replacement event for the postponed Dakar 2022 Youth Olympic Games, which were rescheduled to 2026, were rejected.

The sub-committee said it supported individual regions holding activities or events involving youth sailors, but expressed concern a replacement event would be too close to the 2022 Youth Sailing World Championships, while not having costs covered by the International Olympic Committee.
