The European Athletics Council will decide the host of the 2024 European Athletics Championships tomorrow, with Rome and Katowice-Silesia vying for the event.

The award of the event will be the key decision taken by European Athletics during its three-day Council meeting.

Rome will be seeking to host the European Championships for the second time, with the Italian capital having staged the event back in 1974.

Should Rome be awarded the event it would mark the third time Italy has served as host.

Italy hosted the inaugural European Championships in 1934.

The Stadio Olimpico would host the majority of events, although the Vatican has been tipped to host the start and finish of the half-marathon.

The shot put could be held in front of the Colosseum.

Poland has never hosted the European Championships.

Katowice and the Silesia region had been tipped as a contender to host the 2023 European Games, but the event was eventually awarded to the Krakow-Małopolska area of Poland.

Swedish city Gothenburg and Belarus' capital Minsk were all confirmed to have been part of the bid process in January last year.

Neither city is now in contention.

This year’s European Championships were scheduled to take place in Paris, but the event was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Hosts will also be confirmed for the 2023 European Athletics Indoor Championships and 2023 European Athletics Under-23 Championships over the coming days.

Candidates for all the European Athletics events to be allocated next week will have the opportunity to make online presentations supporting their bids during the Council meeting.

European Athletics said the Council will also assess preparations for other future events.

This includes the Torun 2021 European Athletics Indoor Championships, which is scheduled to take place from March 5 to 7 next year in Poland.

Preparations for the Munich 2022 European Championships will be assessed.

The second edition of the multi-sport event is scheduled to take place from August 15 to 21 in 2022.

Seven sports featured at the inaugural event in Glasgow and Berlin in 2018, with nine now set to be contested at Munich 2022.

Athletics, cycling, gymnastics, rowing and triathlon remain from the first edition, with beach volleyball, canoe sprint, sport climbing and table tennis also set to be held.

Presentations from various European Athletics Commissions and Advisory Groups, as well as the Athletes Committee, will also be given.

There will additionally be reports on European Athletics' financial position, including the 2021 budget and 2020 to 2023 financial plan.
