Competition had been scheduled to take place in South Africa at the end of 2022, with the exact dates yet to be confirmed. 

It is now set to played be from February 9 to 26 2023. 

This was due to the calendar congestion in 2022, caused by the postponement of the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup from February and March 2021 to the same months in 2022.

This delay was a result of the coronavirus pandemic, which has disrupted sporting events around the world. 

Women's cricket is also making its Commonwealth Games debut in 2022, with a T20 contest in Birmingham in July and August. 

With no major women's cricket events currently scheduled for 2023, the ICC Board pushed the Women’s T20 World Cup back, claiming this will better support player preparation and to continue to build the momentum around the women’s game beyond 2022.

There are presently no major women's international tournaments scheduled in 2021.

"Moving the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup to 2023 makes perfect sense on a number of levels," said ICC chief executive Manu Sawhney. 

"Firstly, it will provide a better workload balance for players giving them the best possible opportunity to perform to the highest levels on a global stage. 

"Secondly, we can continue to build the momentum around the women’s game through 2022 and into 2023. 

"We are committed to fueling the growth of the women’s game and today’s decision enables us to do that over the longer term."

The last edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup took place this year and was hosted by Australia, who beat India by 85 runs in the final to earn the title.
