China's Sun Yingsha and Ma Long have won the first World Table Tennis (WTT) showcase event in Macau.

In the women's singles, 20-year-old Sun dropped just one game to win the title in an 11-10, 11-8, 11-6, 9-11, 11-6, 11-4 victory over compatriot Chen Xingtong.

Earlier this month, Sun went out of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Finals in the semi-finals.

This event at the Tap Seac Multisport Complex featured an octagon-shaped court design and a table with orange lines and a special undercarriage fitted with LED panelling, giving fans a first glimpse of WTT's visual identity.

A prize purse of $800,000 (£601,000/€668,000) was on offer in Macau.

In the men's final, Wang Chuquin's run came to an end as he fell to Ma 11-5, 11-9, 11-4, 11-5, 10-11, 11-8.

Losing the fifth game did little to halt Ma's momentum as the reigning Olympic champion beat the current Youth Olympic Games champion.

Ma also won team gold medals at London 2012 and Rio 2016.

The next event currently on the ITTF calendar is the team World Championships in Busan in South Korea, scheduled to run from February 28 to March 7 2021.
