A new facility for sambo is due to open in the far-eastern Russian city of Khabarovsk this month.

Known as The Sambo Palace, the idea for the venue was born in 2016 and construction began a year later with the laying of the foundation stone.

The Russian Sambo Federation said that Mikhail Degtyarev, the acting governor for the region, had confirmed that the completion of the facility was "imminent".

Yuri Trutnev, a Deputy Prime Minister of Russia and a representative for the far east, is expected to open the new venue.

"I will definitely go to the Khabarovsk territory in the near future," he said to RIA Novosti.

"As far as I know, they want to invite me to the Sambo Palace for the opening in the near future."

Russia is the dominant force in sambo with the martial art originating in the country.

At last month's International Sambo Federation World Championships in Novi Sad in Serbia, the country dominated with 17 golds at the top of the medal table.

Belarus, in second place, won just three golds.
