New dates have been confirmed in 2022 for the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Bathurst in Australia, which were due to take place next year but have been postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Organisers had requested in July that the event, scheduled to be held on March 20 next year, be postponed because of travel restrictions currently in place in Australia.

World Athletics had announced at the end of its last Council meeting in July that it was working with organisers to "explore alternative dates".

Following the conclusion of the latest World Athletics Council meeting, chief executive Jon Ridgeon confirmed that the event has been re-scheduled for February 19 in 2022.

To help accommodate the new date on the calendar, the World Athletics Indoor Championships have been moved back by one week.

They were originally due to be held between March 11 and 13 but will now take place between March 18 and 20.

World Athletics President Sebastian Coe warned that the sport was "still in challenging times" due to the pandemic.

"We have to assume this [virus] will be around for some time even with the light at the end of the tunnel in the form of a vaccine."
