Hosts Denmark defeated Spain to keep their hopes of reaching the European Women's Handball Championship semi-finals alive.

Knowing they had to win, and with Spain already eliminated, the Danes were dominant throughout and held a 17-10 half-time lead in Herning as no Spanish player scored more than a solitary goal in the first period.

The advantage was up to 10 goals by the end of the game, and Mia Rej led Denmark with six goals.

Danish coach Jesper Jensen identified his players' conditioning as a key factor in the win.

"We had a strategy that we would like to make the game as tough and hard as possible because I think we are in a very good physical and mental condition right now, considering that we are in game five," Jensen said.

"We made it hard so a very good effort from the starting line-up, who really made it hard."

Denmark face Olympic champions Russia in their final Group 1 match on Tuesday (December 15), and a win will see them through to the final four.
