Algeria triumphed in the team contest as the African Judo Championships in Madagascar came to a conclusion.

The team event was held on the final day of competition in Madagascar's capital city Antananarivo.

Algeria clinched gold, with Senegal taking silver. 

Hosts Madagascar and Kenya both took bronze medals, while Burundi and Gabon had to settle for fifth place. 

Despite not medalling in the team event, Egypt topped the medal table with five golds, two silver and two bronze. 

Including their team gold, Algeria finished with two golds, three silver and two bronze.

Morocco were third with one gold, three silver and two bronze. 

The African Championships only featured senior events, with the cadet, junior and kata events cancelled due to the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic.

Organisers said no effort was spared in ensuring the safety of the 33 countries participating. 

The event was organised under COVID-19 protocols outlined by the International Judo Federation.
