The chair of International Rugby League (IRL), Greg Barclay, has published a message of hope going into 2021 as the governing body gets ready for the Rugby League World Cup.

The men's, women's and wheelchair tournaments are scheduled to take place in October and November in England, and that was one of many topics that Barclay covered in his end-of-year message.

Barclay also mentioned appointments and departures within the IRL structure and the growth of its membership in 2020, particularly in Africa.

"This has been a remarkable year and one of the biggest tests ever for all sport around the world," Barclay said regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.

"It is astonishing that we have seen as much rugby played as we have in so many countries.

"To those members who have been largely locked down and unable to play, I would like to thank them for their diligence and strength throughout the most challenging of circumstances and wish them well for 2021.

"All of us are looking forward to 2021 with anticipation that we will be able to enjoy our sport safely and with some degree of normality.

"IRL has managed to develop as an international federation and I would like to thank the staff, volunteers and directors for their hard work.

"The re-branding exercise has continued and the members’ portal, to assist every member with their administration, is being rolled out currently.

"We continue to grow our membership with particular growth in the Middle East – Africa region.

"The rise to affiliate membership of Nigeria, Ghana and possibly Cameroon, is particularly significant as is the commendation of the Philippines, our first Asian member, to the general assembly in 2021."

The Nigeria Rugby League Association and Rugby League Federation of Ghana this year became IRL's first affiliate members in Africa.

IRL's Board has recommended that Cameroon Rugby League XIII receive the same status.

"The Rugby League World Cup remains on track for a superb end to 2021," added Barclay.

"Jon Dutton and his team have the plans in place to cover all eventualities and we can all look forward to the biggest and best ever competition for men, women and wheelchair players.

"Finally, I would like to thank Danny Kazandjian, who has taken up the position as secretary general of IRL and pay tribute to outgoing chief executive, Nigel Wood, as he steps down from IRL after 18 years of service to the international game."

Wood has retired from his position and has been replaced by IRL independent director Emma Young as a director on the Organising Committee for the Rugby League World Cup 2021.

In total, 61 men's, women's and wheelchair matches are scheduled when three World Cups are held in England next year.

The Copper Box - built for the London 2012 Olympics - is among the iconic venues set to be used, so too Old Trafford in Manchester, Anfield in Liverpool, and Headingley Stadium and Elland Road in Leeds.
