Jamaica's four-game netball tour of England has been cancelled due to extended restrictions to international travel during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The contest, branded as the Vitality Netball Legends Series, was scheduled to take place this month at London's Copper Box Arena.

Concerns about the viability of staging the event were raised after the Jamaican Government banned flights to and from the United Kingdom for 14 days because of a new strain of coronavirus, thought to be up to 70 per cent more transmissible.

This was initially due to expire on January 4, two days before the Sunshine Girls are due to fly to the UK, but has since been extended until January 31.

The Vitality Netball Legends Series was subsequently cancelled.

"We are hugely disappointed that the series cannot happen in January, but with the extended restrictions to international travel between the UK and Jamaica, it isn’t possible for the fixture to go ahead as planned," a statement from England Netball said.

"We would like to thank the Jamaican national team and the Vitality Roses for their collective efforts to plan and prepare for the series to date, and their support in making this decision."

England Netball said it would aim to reschedule the tour with Jamaica.

"As we look ahead to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, we are committed to getting the Vitality Roses back to the court for crucial preparation and competitive game time," the governing body said.

"We are working behind the scenes to confirm potential new fixtures, whilst continuing to ensure the health and safety of all players and staff.

"We will confirm new dates for the Jamaica series later this year, in line with evolving Government guidance and will update all stakeholders on plans as soon as we can."

The series between the teams ranked third and fourth in the latest International Netball Federation world rankings had been eagerly anticipated.

England currently sit in third with 6,299 points with Jamaica in fourth with 3,496 points.

The sides last meeting was at the Copper Box in January 2020 as part of the Vitality Netball Nations Cup, a match that Jamaica edged 70-66.
