Germany’s Laura Nolte and Deborah Levi were crowned European champions in the two-woman bobsleigh event at the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) World Cup in Winterberg.

The European Championship was held as part of the IBSF World Cup series.

Nolte and Levi posted the fastest times in both runs of the competition, clocking 56.87sec and 56.73 on the German track.

The duo finished with an overall time of 1min 53.60sec.

Their time was 0.42 fastest than compatriots Kim Kalicki and Ann-Christin Strack, who finished as the silver medallists on 1:54.02.

The final podium place was shared between two crews.

Austria’s Katrin Beierl and Jennifer Onasanya finished in a time of 1:54.39, which was matched by Germany’s Mariama Jamanka and Leonie Fiebig.

Kalicki, the junior world champion, remains top of the World Cup standings on 1,030 points.

Beierl and Nolte complete the top three in the World Cup leaderboard on 978 and 885 points, respectively.

Germany's Francesco Friedrich and Thorsten Margis triumphed in the men's two-man competition, the former's eighth European title of his career.

The German pair achieved the fastest time in both runs, ending with a combined total of 1:50.08.

Victory also put Friedrich level with fellow German André Lange on a record 45 World Cup wins.

Johannes Lochner and Eric Franke, also of Germany, finished as the runners-up in 1:50.75.

Benjamin Maier and Markus Sammer became the first Austrians to earn a two-man European Championship medal since 1973, with the duo placing third in 1:50.93.

Defending European champion Oskars Kibermanis was absent from the event, after the Latvian team withdrew prior to the competition after positive coronavirus tests.

Friedrich extended his lead in the World Cup rankings, with the pilot having 2,010 points to Lochner's 1,849.
