IcanDo eV has been recognised for its educational resources during the pandemic, giving information to teachers and children about safeguarding from COVID-19 while playing sport.

The club was announced as the winner of the accolade at a digital award ceremony at DZ Bank in Berlin and is now set to receive €10,000 (£8,900/$12,100).

In total, 17 clubs were nominated for the award in 2021.

In second was karate club Zanshin-Siegerland, which has been teaching a prevention programme to protect youngsters against sexual violence and child abuse by teaching karate.

The North Rhine-Westphalia club will receive €7,500 (£6,700/$9,000). 

Third place and a fund of €5,000 (£4,430/$6,000) went to Duvenstedter Sports Club 1969 in Hamburg, which aims to ensure that all young people in the area grow up with sport in their lives.

The remaining 14 finalists share fourth place and each receive €1,000 (£890/$1,200).

"Despite the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated restrictions, which are severely affecting the 90,000 sports clubs in Germany, great projects made it to the final again," said DOSB President Alfons Hörmann. 

"The creativity and the energy of the clubs are simply outstanding, many thanks to everyone involved."

Hörmann also warned of the impact of the pandemic on German sport, however, claiming the repercussions must be counteracted "at all costs". 

"The number of club members leaving is increasing, new entries are missing," he said. 

"Children and young people in particular suffer from a lack of sports facilities and the motivation to volunteer is falling - we must counteract these developments at all costs."
