New dates for next year's Men's Under-21 World Championship have been announced by World Lacrosse.

The event in Limerick in Ireland is now due to be staged from August 10 to 20 in 2022 - having initially been planned for 2020.

A series of postponements due to the coronavirus crisis have seen the event moved back by two years, however, and the upper age limit has also increased from 19 to 21 to ensure athletes do not miss out on the chance to compete at a World Championship.

The World Lacrosse Women’s World Championship in Maryland, the World Games in Alabama - where lacrosse is on the programme - and the Men's Under-21 World Championship are all due to be staged in an eight-week window in 2022.

"With helpful input from our membership, we are now able to confirm our second World Championship for the summer of 2022 and can begin looking forward to what will be an exciting summer of international lacrosse competition next year," World Lacrosse President Sue Redfern said.

"In particular, we would like to thank Ireland Lacrosse and the University of Limerick for their commitment in making certain the U21 World Championship is staged and preserving this important competitive opportunity for athletes from around the world."

Both men's and women's lacrosse will be played at the Birmingham 2022 World Games, with women's lacrosse an official sport and men's an invitational one.

Ireland Lacrosse last year withdrew from the men's event to allow the Iroquois Nationals - who represent the Haudenosaunee, a confederacy of six First Nations, and are ranked third in the world - to take part.

The Iroquois Nationals had not previously been eligible to compete, but a change to eligibility criteria made it possible for the team to take part, as it does at World Lacrosse Championships.

Lacrosse's origins can be traced back to Native Americans.
