A total of 36 athletes competed at the UIAA Ice Climbing European Championships in Champagny-en-Vanoise, with lead and speed events held in the French resort of La Plagne.

France’s Louna Ladevant triumphed in the men’s lead competition after topping in each of the three competition rounds.

He was followed by Russia’s Nikolai Kuzovlev and his older brother Tristan Ladevant.

Russia’s Danila Bikurlov secured victory in the men’s speed event in a time of 7.81sec, with compatriots Anton Nemov and Vladislav Iurlov rounding off the podium places.

Maria Tolokonina won both the women’s lead and speed titles.

The Russian star overcame her team-mate Irina Dubovtseva in the women’s speed final, with the podium clean sweep secured when Valeriia Bogdan beat the Czech Republic’s Aneta Louzecka to win bronze.

Tolokonina saw off the challenge of Switzerland’s Sina Goetz and fellow Russian Ekaterina Vlasova in the lead competition.

The UIAA said all athletes, officials and staff had to submit negative COVID-19 PCR tests before the event.

Over fifty random rapid tests were conducted throughout the weekend which all returned negative.

No fans were permitted to attend the annual Ouray Ice Festival event, which was held at Colorado in the United States with 50,000 viewers watching a livestream.

Athletes competed on routes set on a mix of real ice and rock, before finishing on an artificial tower.

The men’s event was won by 16-year-old Keenan Griscom, who finished ahead of Kevin Lindlau and Cody Stevenson.

Corey Buhay won the women’s event, followed by Angela Limbach and Catalina Shirley.
