Hockey Canada has announced the managerial line-up for the Canadian men’s ice hockey team for the Beijing 2022 Olympics.

The management line-up has been announced on the basis that players from the National Hockey League (NHL) will be able to compete at the Games, scheduled to begin on February 4 2022.

The chances of this were increased when a new collective bargaining agreement was reached in July 2020.

Despite the arrangement being confirmed by the NHL Board of Governors and the NHL Players Association, agreement still needs to be reached with the International Olympic Committee and the International Ice Hockey Federation.

Doug Armstrong has been named as general manager of the team.

The 56-year-old holds the same role for NHL side the St Louis Blues and served as part of the Canadian management team at both the Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014 Olympics.

On both occasions Canada won men’s ice hockey gold, an achievement replicated at Salt Lake City 2002 and on six occasions during Games held between 1920 and 1952.

Alongside Armstrong on the management team is Ken Holland as associate general manager.

Holland was also part of the gold-medal winning Canadian management team in 2010 and 2014 and is currently the general manager of NHL team the Edmonton Oilers.

Three assistant general managers - Ron Francis, Roberto Luongo and Don Sweeney have also been announced as part of the managerial set-up, while Scott Salmond has been named as the squad’s senior vice-president of national teams.

"It is an exciting time to be able to introduce the members of Canada’s management group, who each bring a tremendous amount of international and championship experience that will benefit our team if NHL players are able to participate in the 2022 Winter Olympics," said chief executive officer of Hockey Canada Tom Renney.

"Under Doug’s leadership, as well as that of our entire management group, we’re thrilled to task them to lead us into 2022, with the opportunity to oversee our staff and players as they compete for an Olympic gold medal."

Ice hockey matches at Beijing 2022 are scheduled to be played at the Beijing National Indoor Stadium and the Wukesong Arena, with the Games scheduled to run from February 4 to 20.
