Peter McCrory has been elected to lead Triathlon Canada’s Board of Directors, the national governing body has announced.

The British-born administrator replaces Les Pereira who stepped down from the Board of Directors last week.

McCrory will be tasked with helping to ensure more high-performance triathletes feature on the international podium while providing an accessible and safe opportunity for all Canadians to participate in triathlon.

He has served as chair of Triathlon Canada’s Governance Committee since 2019 and is currently director of the Olympic Oval at the University of Calgary.

McCrory has been credited with helping the Olympic Oval to achieve operational delivery of more than CAD$4 million (£2.2 million/$3.1 million/€2.6 million) in revenue for the Repsol Sport Centre.

McCrory has also worked closely with Sport Canada, Own the Podium, Canadian Sport Institutes, and public office fundraising organisations alongside more than 35 clubs, their coaches and their Boards.

He has had executive positions with sports venues in Canada’s Olympic and Paralympic community based in Calgary.

"It is an incredible honour to have the opportunity to lead the Board of Directors for a sport that has been in my blood since the age of 15," McCrory said.

"This is an exciting, yet critical time, in the history of Triathlon Canada.

"We are in a good place both on and off the field of play, but triathlon is still a relatively young sport compared to others and we need to continue to be innovative and challenge ourselves as a community across the country if we truly want to achieve excellence at all levels."

McCrory studied International Business and Spanish at Liverpool John Moore’s University, before a 17-year career in the Royal Air Force as a helicopter weapon systems officer.

He also represented the Air Force in triathlon, swimming, water polo and rowing.

Towards the end of his Air Force service, McCrory completed a Masters Degree in Sport and Exercise Science, with the intent on a second career in sport.

McCrory emigrated to Calgary in February 2011.

Triathlon Canada revealed that McCrory brings an applied understanding of commercial leadership and the science of sport to the helm of Triathlon Canada’s Board of Directors.

"My years of flying with the military taught me two valuable lessons that I use each day in my professional life: the importance of respecting yourself and your team, and the need to get people focused on delivering the highest possible standard," said McCrory.

"In the air force, we would always aim to be ‘on time and on target’ when we were executing flying missions, striving for nothing less than high performance.

"And one of the greatest keys to success I took out of the military is the importance of getting people engaged on the achievement of the same common goal.

"We have a great team in place at Triathlon Canada and incredibly supportive sponsors.

"I am excited to continue working with our Board of Directors, the experienced professionals we have on staff at the national office and in each of our provinces, as well as our sport and Government partners to accomplish our collective goals of building Triathlon Canada into a world-leading sport organisation."
