Britain's Charlotte Bankes and Spain's Lucas Eguibar both claimed their first world titles at the 2021 International Ski Federation (FIS) Snowboard Cross World Championships in Idre Fjäll in Sweden.

Top seed in the women's event, Bankes finished first in both of her heats prior to the final where she held off Italy's Michela Moioli and reigning champion Eva Samková of the Czech Republic for the gold.

Moioli and Samková won silver and bronze respectively, while Australia's Belle Brockhoff did not finish in the final.

The podium was the same as the 2019 World Championships, when Bankes won silver and Moioli won bronze.

In the small final, Swiss snowboarder Lara Casanova finished fifth, while the United States' Stacy Gaskill, France's Chloe Trespeuch and Kristina Paul of the Russian Ski Federation, completed the top eight.

Spanish snowboarder Eguibar added to his 2017 silver medal with a win in the men's competition.

The third seed won all his heats with the exception of the semi-final, on his way to victory, with Austria's Alessandro Hämmerle and Canada's Éliot Grondin winning the silver and bronze medals.

A second Austrian Jakob Dusek finished fourth in the big final.

Hämmerle was the top seed and despite just making it through the opening round, managed to progress through to the final with Grondin, who won his first world medal at the age of 19.

German duo Martin Nörl and Paul Berg finished fifth and sixth, while France's Merlin Surget and Canada's Liam Moffatt were seventh and eighth.

The United States' Mick Dierdorff, who won the gold in 2019, failed to make it past the opening round, while 2019 medallists Austria's Hanno Douschan and Emanuel Perathoner of Italy did not participate.

Tomorrow sees the snowboard cross team finals scheduled to take place.
