Top seeds Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying of Malaysia battled to a three-game victory against Nipitphon Phuangphuapet and Benyapa Aimsaard of Thailand as the first round of the mixed doubles opened the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Yonex Swiss Open.

Peng Soon and Liu Ying triumphed 21-15 15-21 21-19 in 53 minutes at the St Jakobshalle in Basel, Switzerland.

Second seeds Haifaz Faizal and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja of Indonesia were the biggest casualties of the day as they suffered a 21-18 21-10 loss to Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa of India.

The other seeded players to be on the end of an upset in the first round were eighth seeds Robin Tabeling and Selena Piek of the Netherlands who lost 22-20 21-23 21-16 to Rodion Alimov and Alina Davletova of Russia.

Other matches included third seeds Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith of England winning 21-18 21-15 against Pranaav Jerry Chopra and Reddy N Sikki of India while fourth seeds Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie of Malaysia triumphed 21-18 21-14 against Eloi Adam and Margot Lambert.

The second day of the BWF Swiss Open features a packed schedule with 64 matches due to be played across four courts.

Action is scheduled in the first round of the men’s and women’s singles and men’s and women’s doubles categories.
