Slovenia's Primož Roglič of Jumbo-Visma has taken the lead of the Paris-Nice race, following a convincing stage four victory from Chalon-sur-Saône to Chiroubles in France.

The 2020 Tour de France runner-up accelerated away from the peloton with just three kilometres to go, earning a gap of 12 seconds to his closest rivals over the 188-kilometre hilly stage.

Germany's Max Schachmann of Bora-Hansgrohe took second place, while France's Guillaume Martin of Cofidis was third, both 12 seconds behind the Slovenian.

Belgium's Tiesj Benoot of Team DSM and Russia's Aleksandr Vlasov of Astana-Premier Tech completed the top five.

Roglič now has a gap of 35 seconds to Schachmann in the general classification, while the United States' Brandon McNulty moved up to third, having finished close enough to the main chasers to keep some of his advantage from the time trial.

Vlasov is fourth overall, marginally ahead of Spain's Ion Izagirre of Astana-Premier Tech in fifth, who was just 16 seconds adrift of Roglič on this stage.

The Slovenian put himself in a prime position with a strong showing in the time trial yesterday, which left him in third and just six seconds short.

"I'm definitely happy about the result," said Roglič.

"Already yesterday was a nice one.

"I showed that I proved to myself that we were working good, so yeah, it's beautiful and I'm super happy that we have two wins for our team today."

This follows Belgian Wout van Aert's victory on the opening stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico today.

Race leader from stage three, Switzerland's Stefan Bissegger of EF Education-Nippo, was dropped from the peloton with 21km to go and the young rider finished nearly eight minutes behind Roglič.

The next stage is set to take place from Vienne to Bollène over a 203km flat route tomorrow.
