A record number of coaches have responded to the Jamaica Olympic Association's (JOA) call for participation in a high-performance course delivered by Panam Sports in partnership with the Canadian Coaching Association.

More than 70 people have registered their intent to take part in the course which will cover areas including coaching philosophy and leadership, advanced performance planning, physiology, strength and conditioning, sports psychology, advanced injury prevention, recovery strategies and high-performance analysis.

The JOA believes the course can contribute to both short- and long-term improvements in performance.

"Our members and stakeholders have not only seized the JOA's vision of the value of education and training but have embraced the known principle that an investment in education pays the best dividends in your working life and is your pension in your twilight years," said secretary general and chief executive Ryan Foster.

JOA President Christopher Samuda added that this was an investment in skills for the future of sport in Jamaica.

"The creation of a sport industry demands a physical and socio-economic infrastructure that is based on viable investments in the human capital and not on hand-outs - for the latter creates dependency while the former promotes independence and mastery," said Samuda.

The JOA has placed an emphasis on education in recent months.

As well as signing an agreement with the United States Sports Academy to offer more tertiary education opportunities to athletes and personnel, it plans to make its internship programme available to the Jamaican diaspora later this year.

In the coming months, the JOA says it will also roll out customised courses for administrators and coaches in various sports as part of its investment in education.
