Oh and Márton thrived in the pressure-cooker environment inside the BOK Hall as fencers went toe-to-toe for places at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Márton saw off Olga Nikitina of Russia 15-7 before beating compatriot Liza Pusztai 15-9 and then France’s Cecilia Berder by the same scoreline in the women’s final.

Pusztai and South Korea’s Yoon Ji-su both finished on the podium with bronze medals after reaching the semi-finals.

In the men’s event, four-time world champion Oh swept aside Russian Kamil Ibragimov 15-5 before downing German Matyas Szabo 15-10.

The final turned out to be a closely fought affair with Oh holding his nerve to edge out Hungarian Áron Szilágyi 15-14.

The bronze medal was shared by Szabo and Georgian Sandro Bazadze.

The Budapest Sabre World Cup is the first major global fencing event in what has been a 2020-2021 season disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Due to the COVID-19 situation, Hungary’s borders are closed, but athletes have been allowed to travel to the event which has implemented a series of anti-virus measures and is being held behind closed doors.

Action is due to continue tomorrow with the men’s and women’s team competitions.
