Russia and Poland struck gold in the team events at the International Fencing Federation (FIE) Sabre World Cup in Hungarian capital Budapest.

Kamil Ibragimov, Anatoliy Kostenko, Konstantin Lokhanov and Veniamin Reshetnikov combined to help Russia clinch top spot in the men’s competition.

The Russian quartet beat the German team of Max Hartung, Richard Huebers, Matyas Szabo and Benedikt Wagner 45-43 in the final at the BOK Hall.

The bronze medal went to Hungary’s Tamás Decsi, Csanád Gémesi, András Szatmári and Áron Szilágyi.

They claimed a 45-40 win over a South Korean team comprising of yesterday’s individual gold medallist Oh Sang-uk as well as Gu Bon-gil, Kim Jung-hwan and Kim Jun-ho.

Sylwia Matuszak, Marta Puda, Angelika Water and Zuzanna Cieslar secured gold for Poland with a 45-44 victory over Michela Battiston, Martina Criscio, Rossella Gregorio and Irene Vecchi of Italy in the women’s final.

South Korea picked up bronze thanks to the efforts of Choi Soo-yeon, Kim Ji-yeon, Seo Ji-yeon and Yoon Ji-su.

The quartet beat the French team of Sara Balzer, Cécilia Berder, Manon Brunet and Charlotte Lembach.

The Budapest Sabre World Cup was the first major global fencing event in what has been a 2020-2021 season disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic and provided fencers with chances to secure their places at this year’s rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
