Thailand's Suthasini Sawettabut and Kirill Skachkov of Russia sealed the last available places in the table tennis competition at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games at the World Singles Qualification Tournament in Doha.

Skachkov stunned Britain's Liam Pitchford, the top seed, to claim the final spot in the men's singles event at Tokyo 2020.

The world number 54, who will have to compete as part of the neutral Russian Olympic Committee team at Tokyo 2020 owing to the sanctions imposed on Russia as punishment for the state-sponsored doping scandal, beat Pitchford 11-7, 7-11, 11-8, 14-12, 11-7.

Skachkov is the fourth man to earn his Olympic Games place at the World Singles Qualification Tournament, following in the footsteps of the Czech Republic’s Lubomir Jancarik, Hungary’s Bence Majoros and Slovakia’s Wang Yang.

Sawettabut, the third seed in the women's singles event, overcame Spain’s Maria Xiao 13-11, 5-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-8 to book her ticket for the postponed Olympics in the Japanese capital.

The world number 41 joins Britt Eerland of The Netherlands, Sweden’s Linda Bergström, Russia’s Polina Mikhailova and Monaco’s Yang Xiaoxin in securing a place at Tokyo 2020.

"I feel very happy to have qualified for the Olympics," said Sawettabut.

"These will be my second Olympics.

"It was very difficult, she is a left-hander and she played very well in this match.

"I tried my best, tried to calm down and play it point by point."

Table tennis tournaments at Tokyo 2020, postponed to 2021 because of the coronavirus crisis, are set to be held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium from July 24 to August 6.
