The Shaoxing Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium has undergone a series of alterations including a transformation of its lighting, an upgrade of off-site facilities and landscaping for competition arenas.

It is now the first project to be finished in Shaoxing ahead of the 2022 Asian Games, scheduled to begin in 17 months’ time.

Shaoxing is one of the co-host cities for the Games and will stage the most events behind Hangzhou, including baseball, softball, basketball, rock climbing and volleyball.

Hangzhou 2022 organisers said the site of the Baseball-Softball Sports Culture Center was a "hive of activity" with the construction project 28.5 per cent complete following excavation and foundation work.

A three-layer steel structure has also been installed for the training centre.

The new Yangshan Rock Climbing Center is expected to be finished by the end of the October this year.

Once completed, the complex - which is designed to have 2,100 seats for spectators - will comprise of a competition venue, warm-up field, indoor arena and other supporting facilities.

"Since the full resumption of work on the sixth day of the first lunar month this year, the project has been progressing at full capacity," Hangzhou 2022 said.

"At present, the excavation of the shallow foundation of the cushion cap has been completed, the field construction and the production of steel structural parts have advanced together.

"It is planned to complete the foundation construction in April 2021, and to have the project finished and accepted by the end of October 2021."

A project to revamp the Gymnasium of China Textile City Sports Center is continuing and organisers aim to finish it by next month.

According to Hangzhou 2022, the renovation is 94 per cent complete, with workers installing and upgrading equipment to meet the requirements for volleyball events.

The competition area is set to cover 3,100 square metres and provide seating for 5,000 fans.

"The renovation of the gymnasium include the competition venues, facilities in spectator areas, functional rooms and dedicated systems for events, media and broadcast areas, security and transportation facilities," said Hangzhou 2022.

Shaoxing is also set to provide a football training venue for the Games.

Hangzhou 2022 said the renovation of Jianhu Football Field was going at "full blast" as it bids to create a stand, indoor training ground and car parking on the 7,200 square metre site.

"In order to finish this huge project with high standard and high quality in a short period of time and make sure it is up to the construction standard of the Asian Games football field, the project has adopted the mode of acceptance for the lack of part of the material so that the construction can be carried out while the approval procedure is in progress and does cross operation to catch up with the construction progress in all aspects," said a site supervisor.

It is hoped all venues will be completed in time for the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games, scheduled to run from September 10 to 25.
