Home athletes completed a golden double on the opening day of the 2021 FIS Freestyle Ski, Snowboard and Freeski Junior World Championships in the Russian city of Krasnoyarsk.

The Siberian city will oversee a total of 17 competitions over eight days at the Sopka Cluster venue that successfully staged the 2019 Winter Universiade.

Russia’s Artem Potapov took gold in the men’s aerials with a score of 96.93 points, just ahead of three rivals from Belarus.

Makar Mitrafanau earned silver with 96.58, ahead of Andrei Kuzmin on 93.41, while Ihar Drabiankou just missed out on the podium with the same score as Kuzmin.

The women’s aerials title went to Anastasiia Prytkova with a score of 86.62.

Swiss competitors filled the rest of the podium as Alexandra Baer scored 82.53 and Ursina Platz recorded a total of 80.01.

The top qualifier for the men’s freeski halfpipe, the final for which is due to take place tomorrow, was 14-year-old Estonian prodigy Henry Sildaru, younger brother of Kelly, the world champion and Winter Youth Olympics champion who has won a record seven medals, including six gold, at these Championships.

Sildaru scored 82.50, followed by South Korea’s Lee Seung Hun, who recorded 75.50, and Russian athlete Fedor Muralev, who scored 71.50.

The women’s freeski halfpipe qualifying was headed by Russian competitor Alexandra Glazkova on 86.75 points, with compatriot Daria Tatalina second on 77.50 and third place going to Switzerland’s Michelle Rageth on 74.25.

As well as the freeski halfpipe finals, tomorrow is also due to feature the aerials team events.
