Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong secured her place in her first Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour Super 1000 final at this year’s All England Open Badminton Championships in Birmingham.

The sixth seed defeated world champion PV Sindhu of India 21-17, 21-9 to advance to the women’s singles final, where she will meet third seed Nozomi Okuhara of Japan.

Okuhara denied an all-Thailand final after coming from behind to beat Ratchanok Intanon 16-21 21-16 21-19 and move within one win of claiming the title for the first time since 2016.

But Chochuwong will be hoping to pull off another upset at the Arena Birmingham tomorrow.

"I’m very happy to be in the final," said Chochuwong.

"My plan was to control myself first and try every single shot, because she is fast and strong.

"After I won the first game, I think in the second she maybe made more mistakes than me."

Fifth seed Sindhu said her high unforced error count proved decisive in her loss to Chochuwong.

"I think it was her day, everything she hit was on the line and I just couldn’t do anything about it," said Sindhu.

"Overall, I should’ve controlled my unforced errors, maybe things could’ve been different then.

"I knew it was going to be a good match, she’s not an easy player and she’s doing well.

"Her strokes are really good and she’s going to be a really good player."

In the men’s singles, Malaysian sixth seed Zii Jia Lee progressed to the final after beating Mark Caljouw of The Netherlands 21-13, 21-17.

He will face defending champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark after he overcame compatriot Anders Antonsen 16-21, 21-7, 21-17.

Two Japanese pairings will meet in the final of the men’s doubles after they both defeated Danish opposition.

Third seeds Takeshi Kamura and Keigo Sonoda saw off Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen 21-18, 21-14.

Jeppe Bay and Lasse Mølhede also came unstuck against a Japanese duo as fourth seed Hiroyuki Endo and Yuta Watanabe claimed a 21-13, 21-11 victory.

Japan’s Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota, the top seeds in the women’s doubles, booked their place in the final with a 21-17, 21-7 triumph against Dutch duo Selena Piek and Cheryl Seinen.

They will now meet fellow Japanese pair Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Nagahara, who saw off counterparts Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida 21-19, 21-17 in the semi-finals.

There will also be an all-Japanese mixed doubles final.

Yuki Kaneko and Misaki Matsutomo beat Malaysian third seeds Peng Soon Chan and Liu Ying Goh 21-14, 22-20, while second seeds Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino downed home pair Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith 21-10, 21-18.

All finals are scheduled to be held tomorrow.

The BWF and Badminton England confirmed all players tested negative for COVID-19 after the second round of mandatory testing conducted today.
