Sergio Garcia of Spain hit a stunning walk-off hole-in-one to beat Lee Westwood in a playoff and reach the knockout phase of the World Golf Championships-Match Play in Texas.

The moment of magic from Garcia, the 2017 Masters champion, came on a day where world number one and top seed Dustin Johnson crashed out of the tournament at Austin Country Club.

Johnson became the latest high-profile player to fail to make it out of the tough opening round, where only the group winners progress to the last 16.

He was beaten 1-up by Kevin Na of South Korea in a close encounter, which featured a tense discussion over a conceded putt.

Scotland's Robert MacIntyre, the 41st seed, qualified from group one by virtue of his points record after he overcame American Adam Long 1-up.

But Johnson's exit was overshadowed by Garcia, whose hole-in-one handed him victory over England's Westwood in a playoff for top spot in group eight.

The Spaniard's tee shot on the fourth playoff hole landed just beyond the pin but rolled back into the hole to secure the win in superb style.

Four-time major winner Rory McIlroy is also out after he had to settle for half a point in his game with Cameron Smith of Australia.

England's Ian Poulter made it through from McIlroy's group following a 2&1 triumph in his last group match against Lanto Griffin of the US.

The tournament is due to continue tomorrow.
