The Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) has come under fire from athletes and the country's Sports Authority after the recent National Para Athletics Championships were plagued by numerous issues.

Problems for the PCI began when the event had to be shifted from Chennai to Bengaluru just four days before it was due to start after the local Government withdrew its support at the last minute.

Footage on social media showed how some competitions early on at the Championships took place using mobile phone torch lights because of schedule delays and organisers not using the available floodlights.

Concerns were also raised regarding the standard of facilities for wheelchair users, while there were complaints about the lack of COVID-19 testing and social distancing.

The Sports Authority of India sought clarification from the PCI on wheelchair access at the event, held last week.

The PCI claimed the event had been a success despite the problems, claiming the late change of venue, which came as athletes had already started making their way to Chennai, had left them "in the lurch".

"Despite a lot of challenges, we are happy to close a successful National Championships in just four days," said PCI President Deepa Malik.

"With no competition held over more than a year, this was an important event in our calendar.

"Though there was a last minute change of the venue which led to delays and difficulties, we are happy that we didn't give up our sportsman spirit and pulled it off well."

Events were held at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium and Vidyanagar Stadium in Bengaluru.

More than 900 athletes took part in the Championships, which forms part of the nation's selection process for the postponed Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
