World champion Simone Barlaam led a host nation clean sweep in the men’s 100 metres freestyle S1-13 category, with the S9 swimmer triumphing in a time of 54.52sec, which scored him 1,012 points.

Silver went to compatriot Antonio Fantin, an S6 swimmer, in a world record time of 1min 04.52sec, giving him a score of 1,009, while the podium was completed by Francesco Bocciardo, an S5 swimmer, in 1:10.04, which scored him 999 points.

Italy’s world champion Carlotta Gilli was beaten in the women’s 100m S1-13 category, as compatriot Arjola Trimi, an S3 swimmer, took gold in 1:33.92, scoring 974 points.

Gilli, an S13 swimmer, settled for silver in a time of 1:00.00, with 932 points, while the bronze went to Maria Paula Barrera Zapata of Colombia, with the S10 swimmer finishing in 1:02.59, scoring 917 points.

Barlaam later claimed a second medal of the day in the men’s 100m backstroke S1-2 and S6-14, as he won silver behind compatriot Stefano Raimondi, with the S10 swimmer finishing in 1:00.18, scoring 982 points.

Barlaam, an S9 swimmer, claimed silver finishing in 1:04.28, scoring 947 points, with the bronze going to Ihar Boki of Belarus, an S13 swimmer, who finished in 58:66, scoring 930 points.

Like compatriot Barlaam, Gilli was also attempting a double and went one place better in the women’s 100m backstroke S1-S2 and S6-14 category.

S13 swimmer Gilli took gold in 1:07.72, scoring 945 points in the process.

Silver went to Daria Pikalova of Russia, an S12 swimmer, who finished in a time of 1:09.05, as she scored 928 points.

The podium was completed by Roisin Ni Riain of Ireland, who finished in a time of 1:10.43, scoring 873 points.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, action is taking place behind closed doors at the Bella Italia Village Sports Complex.

The World Series round in Lignano is the third of five scheduled on the circuit this year, with the second round in Lewisville in the United States also taking place this weekend.
