Carlos Manuel Araujo produced a heroic performance to claim victory in the men’s 200m T47 on the final day of the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Jesolo, Italy.

The Cape Verde athlete was the only starter in the race as his two scheduled rivals did not take the start line.

During the race Araujo appeared to suffer a hamstring injury and despite being in obvious discomfort he dramatically hobbled to the line in a time of 34.72sec, to ensure he claimed the gold medal.

Meanwhile, world champion Luka Ekler of Hungary impressed in her 200m race triumphing in a time of 27.58.

Ekler was the only T38 classified athlete in the race but crossed the line in first place to claim gold.

In the field, Paralympic medallist and European champion Oney Tapia of Italy claimed his second gold medal in as many days in different throwing disciplines.

After taking the men’s shot put F11-12 title yesterday, Tapia was today involved in the men’s F11-13 and 20 discus throw.

There were only three throwers in the category, but with all three being Italian, the hosts were guaranteed a clean sweep.

Tapia claimed a convincing victory with a throw of 40.87, with silver going to Fausto Morlacco with 29.86 and bronze claimed by Cristian Lella with 25.33.

Action at the three-day meeting at the Armando Picchi Stadium took place behind closed doors due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It was the first World Para Athletics Grand Prix to be staged in the city after last year’s edition was cancelled as the pandemic developed.

In a tweet after the meeting ended World Para Athletics wrote: "We will remember the first Grand Prix near Venice for a long time."

The next round of the Grand Prix series is scheduled to take place at Nottwil in Switzerland between May 14 and 16.
