The European University Sports Association (EUSA) is still waiting for a response from the Serbian Government over whether the postponed European Universities Games can go ahead at a later date.

Organisers postponed the multi-sport event in Belgrade indefinitely last month because of concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic.

The EUSA said it was hoping to organise the Games, set to feature 21 sports, before the end of the year.

The fate of the event is uncertain, however, as the Serbian Government has not yet responded to the EUSA "as to whether or not the event may still be organised at a later time", according to secretary general Matjaz Pecovnik.

Pecovnik updated members on the status of the Games during a recent virtual meeting, where he also outlined the EUSA’s finances and "the challenges faced due to the postponement" of the event.

Pecovnik also highlighted "the success the association has had with its involvement in European Union-funded projects which have greatly assisted in keeping EUSA operational despite the difficulties faced over the past year".

Badminton, basketball, 3x3 basketball, beach handball, beach volleyball, chess, football, futsal, handball, judo, karate, kickboxing, orienteering, rowing, rugby sevens, table tennis, taekwondo, volleyball and water polo are among the sports due to feature at the Games.

Para-table tennis is also on the programme, as is sitting volleyball as a demonstration sport.
