The World ParaVolley Board of Directors have agreed to push ahead with the tournament, scheduled to be held from June 1 to 5, after meeting with the Organising Committee to discuss preparations.

WorldParaVolley President Barry Couzner claims the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) Germany has done a "great job" to put measures in place to combat coronavirus.

The governing body says it has been working with organisers to ensure all COVID-19 risk assessments are carried out and measures are implemented to deliver a safe event.

"On behalf of World ParaVolley I am very pleased that the Board saw fit to give the green light for NPC Germany to proceed with the Tokyo 2020 men’s final qualifier in June," said Couzner.

"The Organising Committee has done a great job to mitigate the COVID-19 risks in cooperation with technical delegate Toralv Thorkildsen and World ParaVolley medical director Louise Ashcroft.

"I look forward to observing the matches remotely and hope that all of the detailed planning is rewarded by a successful event for the athletes."

Ashcroft added: "The health and safety of World ParaVolley athletes is our top priority in planning the final men’s qualifier event for Tokyo 2020 in 2021.  

"We will continue to work hard with the Organising Committee, the local health authority in Duisburg, and with the teams and participants to mitigate risks to support a safe and successful event."

Germany has been battling with a third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic as the country reported almost 19,000 new cases and a further 232 deaths yesterday.

But hospital admissions are reportedly falling as Germany continues to roll out vaccinations against the virus.

"The coronavirus pandemic continues to keep the world and also Germany on tenterhooks and stay a huge matter of concern," said NPC Germany President Friedhelm Julius Beucher.

"Nevertheless, we remain confident that we will be able to hold the men’s sitting volleyball qualifying tournament in Duisburg under good conditions and as safely as possible for everyone involved.

"We are convinced that the extensive concepts as well as the many-fold precautions in the run-up and on site, which our Organising Committee has worked out together with World ParaVolley, will help to significantly reduce the risk of infection.

"For this reason, we continue to look forward to exciting games for the last ticket to the Paralympics in Tokyo."

Hosts and London 2012 Paralympic bronze medallists Germany have been drawn in Group A alongside Kazakhstan and Canada.

Group B comprises of Croatia, Latvia, Ukraine and the United States.

The winner of the competition will secure the last available place in the men's sitting volleyball tournament at Tokyo 2020.

World ParaVolley had originally planned to hold the qualifying event in Oklahoma in the United States in March 2020.

The tournament was then moved to Duisburg and rescheduled to February 15 to 19 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the postponement of Tokyo 2020.

Competition had to be delayed to June following a spike in the number of coronavirus cases in several countries.
