Switzerland is set to stage the Archery World Cup for the first time when the second leg of the season begins at Lausanne’s World Archery Excellence Centre tomorrow.

A total of 235 athletes from 35 countries are due to compete at the event, scheduled to run from until May 23.

Shanghai was originally scheduled to stage the tournament before it was moved to Lausanne because of the coronavirus pandemic.

There will be no Indian archers in the field after the Swiss Embassy refused to issue short-term visas due to COVID-19 restrictions put on travellers from the country which is battling a surge in cases.

Competition will be closed to spectators, while a number of other COVID-19 countermeasures are set to be implemented to ensure the safety of participants.

"This event is taking place in a very special environment, and I remind all involved that we had two months to organise the event," said Tom Dielen, World Archery's secretary general.

"Certain decisions had to be made that we would not make in normal situations.

"Our main focus is on having athletes compete in a safe and healthy environment and I ask all of you to cooperate with us as much as you can.

"Despite that we have to restrict movements outside of the venue and the hotel, we hope you will be able to get the spirit of the Olympic Capital which will make you want to come back in the future."

The Lausanne leg comes after the Guatemala City staged the opening round of the Archery World Cup season last month.

Indian duo Atanu Das and Deepika Kumari, American Braden Gellenthien and Colombia’s Nora Valdez triumphed in Guatemala City to book their places at the final of the Archery World Cup , scheduled to take place on September 29 and 30 in Yankton in the United States.

Italy's Sergio Pagni, who won the Archery World Cup finals in 2009 and 2010, is set to make his first appearance on the circuit since September 2019.

The third stage of the season is set to be held in French capital Paris from June 21 to 27.

Competition in Lausanne is due to start tomorrow with the qualification rounds for the men’s and women’s recurve and compound events.
