Russia’s Anastasiia Chursina earned victory on the second stage of the Vuelta a Burgos after moving clear from a breakaway group.

Chursina formed part of a three-rider move on the 97 kilometre stage from Pedrosa de Valdeporres to Villarcayo.

The Alé BTC Ljubljana rider was joined by Cyprus’ Antri Christoforou and American Heidi Franz.

The trio had attacked on the first climb of the day and established a lead which peaked at over four minutes.

Chursina launched a solo bid for victory as the breakaway approached the summit of the Alto de Retuerta with 22 kilometres to go.

Her cushion remained over two minutes to a reduced chasing group heading into the final 10 kilometres.

The Russian rider preserved most of her advantage in the closing kilometres to claim a stage victory in 2 hrs 29min 28sec.

Britain’s Alice Barnes sprinted to second place from the chase group, which finished 1:11 behind the winner.

Denmark’s Amalie Dideriksen rounded off the top three on the stage.

Switzerland’s Elise Chabbey assumed the overall race lead on countback, with three riders tied on time at the top of the standings.

New Zealand’s Niamh Fisher-Black is second, while overnight leader Grace Brown of Australia dropped to third.

Tomorrow’s penultimate stage will see the riders tackle a 115km route from Medina de Pomar to Ojo Guareña.
