Zeidler triumphed in one of the six heats in what was the biggest boat class of the regatta as he clocked 32 strokes per minute to clinch victory.

Greece’s Stefanos Ntouskos, who secured his place at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics at the European qualifier earlier this year, advanced to the quarter-finals after pulling clear of Olympic medallist and five-time world champion Ondrej Synek of the Czech Republic.

Synek finished second to join Ntouskos in the quarter-finals which features two Italians, two Germans, two Lithuanians and two Norwegians.

There will also be athletes representing Brazil, Ireland, Belgium and Japan in the next stage of the competition.

The men’s single sculls contest was among 11 events to be held with several crews advancing directly into the finals, while others will be handed a second chance in the repechage.

Spain and Romania qualified for the women’s pair final, while France I and Serbia progressed to the men’s pair final.

Romania and the United States were the fastest in the two women’s double sculls heats to move through to the final where they will meet the Czech Republic and The Netherlands I.

Zhiyu Liu and Liang Zhang steered China to success in the first heat of the men’s double sculls, while The Netherlands I and Switzerland I crossed the finishing line at the same time to share top spot in the third heat.

The other heats were won by Ireland and Poland.

China’s Huiru Li missed out on qualifying for the Olympics at the concluding rowing qualifier for Tokyo 2020 in the women’s double sculls last weekend.

But Li bounced back from that disappointment by registering the fastest qualifying time in the lightweight women’s single sculls, notching 32 strokes per minute.

Martine Veldhuis of The Netherlands and Lydia Heaphy of Ireland also topped the standings in the heats.

France’s Olympic champion Pierre Houin came out on top in the opening heat of the lightweight men’s single sculls.

Reigning world champion Martino Goretti of Italy and Gary O’Donovan of Ireland won the remaining heats to advance to the final.

Britain and South Africa triumphed in the second heat of the men’s four, finishing ahead of Poland and Romania respectively.

There were three heats in the women’s single sculls with Sanita Puspure of Ireland, Russia’s Hanna Prakhatsen and American Kara Kohler finishing on top in each.

Italy got the better of Norway in a closely-fought opening heat of the lightweight men’s double sculls.

Ireland posted the quickest time in heat two before Germany produced a stroke rate of 39 per minute to overcome Belgium in the battle for top spot in heat three.

There was further success for Italy and The Netherlands in the men’s quadruple sculls as they won the two heats in the last event of the day.

It was the second Rowing World Cup of the season after Croatian capital Zagreb staged the first earlier this month.

The third World Cup regatta is scheduled to be held on June 5 and 6 in Sabaudia in Italy.
