Sweden have been knocked out of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship in the group stage following a shoot-out defeat to the ROC team in Riga.

Sweden, world champions in 2017 and 2018, have now played all seven of their games in Group A and cannot advance, stuck on 10 points along with the Czech Republic, who they lost two and therefore will not finish above because of the teams' head-to-head-record.

Jesper Froden gave Sweden a first-period lead and it looked as though the goal may be enough to earn a win, until a crazy closing eight minutes.

Anton Slepyshev levelled for ROC and Alexander Barabanov was then set up to score straight from the restart, with just 12 seconds of game time elapsing between the two goals.

Victor Olofsson equalised for Sweden in the 56th minute, taking the match to overtime and later a shoot-out, which ROC won 3-2.

The Czech Republic beat Denmark via a shoot-out in Group A's other match, following a 1-1 draw, and the four teams to advance from the pool have now been decided.

Denmark were eliminated with the result, while Switzerland and Slovakia will join the Czechs and ROC in the quarter-finals.

Kazakhstan suffered what could prove a costly defeat against already-eliminated Norway in Group B, falling 3-1 after having led.

Mathis Olimb, Thomas Valkvæ Olsen and Stefan Espeland were all on the scoresheet for Norway.

The result means Kazakhstan - third on 10 points, but now out of games - must hope results go their way tomorrow.

The United States beat Germany 2-0 in the group's other game.

Germany, Canada and hosts Latvia all have nine points ahead of tomorrow's final batch of IIHF World Championship group-stage matches.

Latvia will play Germany, while Canada face reigning champions Finland, who are already through along with the US.
