The event, to be held at the TD Garden, will run from January 5 until 12, a month before the Olympics get underway in Russia.

It will also be the 100th anniversary of US Figure Skating in 2014.

The annual meeting is the most prestigious figure skating event in the US, with champions crowned in 20 events.

Some notable previous winners of the event include five time World Champion and double Olympic medallist Michelle Kwan (pictured below), and 1984 Olympic champion Scott Hamilton.

It will be the seventh time that Boston host the championships, the last time being in 2001.

This year, Boston has already held the Synchronised Skating Championships, whilst next year the city is staging the World Synchronised Skating Championship at Boston University.


"US Figure Skating looks forward to returning to Boston for the 2014 Prudential US Figure Skating Championships," US Figure Skating executive director David Raith said.

"The area is steeped in figure skating tradition.

"I'm confident that the community's impressive skating history will extend to the 2014 US Championships."

Some 1,500 athletes, coaches and officials attend the event, and the Olympic team heading to Sochi will be announced following the championship.

US Figure Skating will partner with the Boston Skating Club to stage the event.

The Boston Skating Club President Joe Blount said: "The Skating Club of Boston is extremely pleased to have been chosen to host US Figure Skating's premier event.

"As a founding member of US Figure Skating, we have a long and exciting history hosting the US Championships.

"Boston has always been home to some of the country's most enthusiastic skating fans.


"With the support of the Mayor's office, and our partners at TD Garden, the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center and the Mass Sports Partnership, the Club is promising a spectacular event – both on and off the ice – that will long be remembered by athletes, officials and fans."

This year's championship is taking place in San Jose, California, while next year it will be in Omaha, Nebraska.

At Vancouver 2010, the US won two medals in figure skating.

Evan Lysacek picked up gold in the men's singles event, and Meryl Davis and Charlie White won silver in the ice dancing.

The duo will be hopeful of going one better in Sochi after claiming the world title last year in Moscow.
